Low Dose Rate Brachytherapy (LDR) For some diseases, the Radiation Oncologist will place a radioactive source into a hollow organ such as the vagina, uterus, or airway ("intracavitary"). In other situations sources in needle form may be placed directly into tissue, such as treating some head and neck cancers, gynecologic cancers or soft tissue tumors such as sarcomas ("interstitial"). These are usually temporary implants which in the case of low dose rate (LDR) brachy would be kept in place for two to three days. All of the radioactive sources would then be removed. Interstitial implants of the prostate gland are offered that leave the radioactive "seed" permanently deposited in the prostate after the needles are removed.
