HDR Brachytherapy

This technique allows high radiation doses to be delivered only to the cancerous area - while relatively sparing adjacent healthy tissue. Delivery of HDR radiation is directed using state-of-the-art, computerized, equipment.  Depending on the site being treated, positioning of the radioactive source may be aided by ultrasound guidance or fluoroscopy.  HDR brachytherapy is customized to each patient, so an optimized radiation dose is applied within the precise contours of the target. The implants are temporary and treatment is given during a few concentrated sessions lasting minutes to hours as opposed to low dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy which typically requires that the radioactive sources remain in the patient for several days while the patient stays in the hospital, which makes out-patient treatment a possibility.
